Flip vs. Zi8 – Kodak Zi8 version
I went on a road trip to NYC and shot some side by side video using my Zi8 and Flip Mino HD cameras. Here is the Zi8 version. The HUGE plus to the Zi8 is the big screen and the mic input. I’ll test audio and indoor lighting on another post.
I tried to pick some real world examples and tough lighting situations.

It appears to me that the colors are richer in the Zi8 than the Flip. But one thing I did notice was that you were on the move most of the time. What I have found with both of my cameras, I feel like I can steady the flip better than the Zi8.
I have been using my Flip Ultra HD most of the time. But with Kodak’s richer colors, I may have to use it more. I just have to learn to be a little more steadier.

Hi Perry, I have both the Flip Mino HD and two Zi8 cameras. The flip is much easier to edit with the software that comes with it. The Zi8 is rediculously hard to edit with the software that comes with it. I’ve had to call tech support for both cameras and found Flip to be very easy to work with while the Zi8 (arcsoft) people incredibly unhelpful. End result, I am using the Zi8′s for my video blog because of the external mic and editing with Pinnacle. Would love to learn what you are going to be offering.

A lot of folks do not like the software that comes with the Zi8. Especially if you are on a Mac. I’ll be posting some tutiorials on how to use the Zi8 with the Video Edit Machine

I happened to like the flip version better because I do not have a zi8 to compare like you did but I also watched both in your demonstration and like the flip version best ! thank you !

I love the Flip too, I use it most often simply because it is so compact!

I feel like I am missing something here. I do not have either camera yet, I want to grab a Zi8 for the external mic option. Why can’t you just take the video file and edit it in any editor you want like I currently do? I actually use a digital camera (Canon A590) and people are always asking me what video camera I use. They are quite surprised when I tell them it’s NOT a video camera. I can edit that footage in any program, is’nt it the same way with video camera’s?

Some folks on a PC and using Sony Vegas have experienced issues. This was fixed by Sony with this file:
sonycreativesoftware.com/support/files/qt7plug.dll
click
1. start
2. my computer
3. c:
4. program files
5. sony
6. vegas movie studio
7. fileIO plug-ins
once you get in to this folder, rename the current DLL to ‘qtplug.dll.old’ and save the new one in its place.

Oh, and rename the extension .mov to .mp4 for each clip and Vegas can read the files. Sony Vegas 9 recommended.
