Hey Perry – my thoughts on your homeward route!
Coach to Rosslare, Ferry to Fishguard, speak nicely to me for a lift to a major industrial port. Find a commercial tanker that does import/export to the US. Hitch a lift back to US in exchange for live marketing video footage on their main product/brand (filmed by you of course!!) which given your expertise you will then make go viral on the internet. Result – lift home for you – viral marketing campaign free for them!! Hope that helps!
    Tanya

PS – a huge THANKS for all your help in our Mastermind session in Ireland last week. (I finally got myself and my car home on Sunday :-)

    Hi Perry,

At this stage, it looks like your best bet for getting back home ASAP is to fly from Portugal as there is no ban for flights from Portuguese airspace (I might be wrong, got this information from Wikipedia) The full article is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_travel_disruption_after_the_2010_Eyjafjallaj%C3%B6kull_eruption

Seems like the best route from Ireland to Portugal is by ferry, got this from Yahoo answers, full answer here: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080810111420AAUwe7o

So… If it’s at all possible, Dublin in Ireland to Portsmouth or Plymouth in England, and then ferry to Santander or Bilbao in Spain, and then coach from there to Madrid, and then onwards to Portugal where you fly back to USA.

Apparently Icelandic airspace isn’t affected by the eruption at all, so ferry to Iceland and then flying from Iceland back to America is another option if possible as well.

Hope that sparks some ideas. You, Carrie and Paul are in our prayers.

    Thad

Are there any cruise ships heading toward the east coast? You may be able to trade your international ticket for a domestic from east coast port of call to PA. Be sure to check ahead and confirm your ticket change before you leave Ireland.

Where is the closest open airport? I’ve been searching for short jump options (ferry, train, etc.) to find a place where you can fly from. Most airlines are giving free ticket changes (most want you to make the changes online). The most current press releases are confusing. One states You might find your original flight is available in a few days – by this coming weekend (while others are not as optimistic). I’m still working on it.

There’s an Irish story about the tourist who arrives in a strange town in rural Ireland and completely lost. He notices a local farmer and stops to ask him directions, to which the farmer says, “Well, If I was you, I wouldn’t start from here…..”!!!!

Same applies to you. Best way to get back to America is not to start in Ireland….

    Perry,

You cannot control the volcano and the backlog of stranded passengers, however the one factor in your control is your interaction with the reservation and ticketing agents. Apply Cialdini’s Law of Reciprocation. As you know, the Rule says that we should try to repay, in kind, what another person has provided us. Understand that this is probably the most difficult experience these agents have ever been involved with and how the anger in the hundreds of passengers they are forced to deal with caused by this situation is directed at them. Treat them how you would want to be treated by a rational and understanding traveler and you will activate the Law of Reciprocation. I give you my personal guarantee that doing this will get you on a plane sooner.

I have used this to get on the first flight out of Haiti in the middle of a Military Coup, have been upgraded to First Class for the long flight to Tahiti, received cabin upgrades on several cruises, and I have even been able to get through Customs problems when arriving from overseas flights using this truism.

In the meantime, use your iPhone to shoot and upload shorts of the situation over there with your url in the description and you will increase your subscriber base. Also if you see people in a distress mode see if you can help them with your iPhone video skills to alleviate their distress. Perhaps they just need to contact someone via video.

    Captain Bert
