The time is now to start a video blog. There are many reasons to do this but the main one is to share your authenticity with others. It’s amazing the instant connection that is made when you are expressing your content via video.

Don’t be afraid or feel like you need to have expensive equipment to start a video blog. Many use a simple video camera such as the Flip video camera. If you want something more professional, you will have to contact me personally so we can discuss the different options. However, a simple hand held video camera that has a USB connection will work just fine.

Determine what you are planning to share via video. Perhaps you are teaching a craft or something more technical, either way be sure to have the proper lighting for your videos to be easily viewed. If you are unsure what type of lighting, you can check out this post, where I share lighting tips. Lots of times, simply shooting outdoors will be perfect lighting.

Most importantly, just do it! Practice, practice, practice and simply do it! Make a list of topics you want to share and practice. Remember the beauty of videos is the ability to edit. If you are unhappy with the lighting, the quality, your look, your background, etc..start over. We are always here to help you with video tips, as well as different programs that are available. For instance if you use a PC, you can edit using Windows Movie Maker and if you use a Mac, iMovie is available. However, don’t let the technical questions baffle you, contact me with your questions.

Start today! Don’t wait until you have a good hair day, or the weather is perfect or whatever excuse you have thought of in the past. The latest trend is video and the easiest way to connect to your community is via video.

When shooting your video it is wise to pick an optimum spot that will give you the best amount of lighting. If you are unsure about the lighting in your room, you may want to do several test videos to find the best spot.

Below I share some tips that will definitely help:

- Be aware of your backgrounds – try to avoid doorways and messy rooms, simply be aware of what’s behind you.

- Avoid white backgrounds – not only will white backgrounds tend to wash your skin out but they are quite boring.

- Notice the overhead lighting – some overhead lighting will give your skin different shades and shadows, be aware of the type of overhead light as well, too bright is not good either.

- Avoid lights in the background – lights in the background will create shadows and will be distracting

- Natural lighting is ideal – standing in front of a window with natural light shining in and a dark background make the best settings, giving you the best natural look

- Most importantly think about your setting – do you want a more professional look, perhaps your office is the ideal spot with bookcases behind you, if you want a more natural look go outside, but be sure the sun is not shining behind you or directly overhead.

- Best tip is to practice, practice, practice – the more often you take videos, you will soon know which lighting will work best for your complexion and which setting will be ideal for your video project and most importantly – HAVE FUN!
